Lucknow Home Gardeners: DIY Vermicompost from Kitchen Waste

From Gomti Nagar terraces to Old City courtyards, Lucknow’s home gardeners are growing tomatoes, chillies, and marigolds in pots again. Kitchen waste piles up daily—why throw it when worms can turn it into black gold for your beds?
What You Need to Start
- A shaded bin or drum with drainage holes
- Bedding: cocopeat or old cardboard torn small
- Red earthworms (Eisenia species—not field worms)
- A handful of mature vermicompost as starter inoculant
5-Step DIY Process
- Set bedding: 10–15 cm moist (not wet) layer in the bin.
- Add worms: Release gently; do not bury in hot sun.
- Feed weekly: Vegetable peels, tea leaves, crushed eggshells—no meat, oil, or dairy.
- Harvest in 60–90 days: Push finished compost to one side; add fresh bedding on the empty side.
- Use in pots: Mix 20–30% with garden soil for containers; water after potting.
